The rumor is out there. According to Deadline, NBC has decided to cancel Law & Order, which means Dick Wolf can’t beat Gunsmoke by getting that 21st season he’s been hoping for. Other sites are reporting that negotiations are still ongoing.
I know it sounds funny, but I actually think it’s time.
Maybe it was the news that S. Epatha Merkerson was leaving after this season. Maybe it was too many cast changes in too short a span of time. Maybe the show just hasn’t been the same since we lost Lennie.
But it just feels like Law & Order has been on life support for a while now and that everyone was doing their best to keep it alive just to make it to that magic 21st season.
I say this as a diehard fan. I’ve seen darn near every single episode of those 20 seasons (not to mention SVU, CI and, dare I admit, Trial by Jury) and I’ll be sad to see it go.
Still, unless we’re looking for 2010 tax loopholes (see? I DO watch), I think we all may need to say “it’s time” and sign the DNR.
I’d rather remember the good times than the last gasps, sitting on a barstool with Lennie, Jack & Claire.
p.s. If you’ve never seen the Aftershock, you wont get that last bit ;-)
Yeah, I used to watch all the time, but less and less since Lennie left, now, I also see it’s time to go. Too bad, but hopefully NBC will find themselves some better programming (what? too much to ask?)
